Nicholas’s book focuses on a sickly giraffe named Zulu and a sweet, but taboo, love story. Co-workers aren’t allowed to date.
Grace, the main character, has bonded with Zulu, helped her thrive in the zoo’s environment, and saved Mary’s Zoo from bankruptcy. Consequently, the main conflict in CAGED Hearts is set in motion when Grace falls head-over-heels for Ethan, her boss and the son of the owners of Mary’s Zoo, and vice versa.
While the love story, plot, and character building proceeded with near perfection, Nicholas’s stilted writing style caught me completely off guard. I finally settled in three-fourths of the way into her story and then was met with the married couple who own the zoo … extremely incompetent and heartless, in my mind.
I’m happy I stuck with the story. Animals are near and dear to my heart. I would love to see the caged animals in their natural habitat, which is why Nicholas couldn’t have picked a better title.
If you love animals and sweet romances, I highly recommend reading this book.
